Litigator
Matthew E. LaFontaine
Matthew LaFontaine is a Maryland attorney with extensive experience representing both claimants and employers and insurers in workers’ compensation matters. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and his law degree from the University of Baltimore.
Matthew has represented both sides of workers’ compensation claims throughout Maryland, providing him with a unique perspective on how claims can be effectively evaluated, negotiated, resolved, and, when necessary, adjudicated. He has litigated workers’ compensation claims at all Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission hearing sites and has substantial experience handling contested matters from initial evaluation through hearing and appeal.
Having represented both claimants and employers and insurers, Matthew understands the different perspectives involved in workers’ compensation disputes and the practical considerations necessary to move claims toward resolution. His experience on both sides of the process allows him to assess claims from a well-rounded perspective and identify opportunities for resolution while remaining prepared to fully litigate matters when necessary.
In addition to his workers’ compensation practice, Matthew has litigated hundreds of automobile tort cases in the Maryland courts. His broad litigation experience has included handling cases through negotiation, litigation, and trial, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the Maryland civil litigation process.
While attending the University of Baltimore School of Law, Matthew was a member of the Family Law Clinic, where he represented individuals in peace-order and divorce proceedings. His clinical experience provided him with valuable hands-on experience representing clients and advocating for their interests in court.
Outside of his legal practice, Matthew is the proud father of Rosie and considers himself a devoted husband and dog dad to King, a miniature Schnauzer, and Fred, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He is also an avid NASCAR fan.
